I love the title of this episode. Although, it’s a bit misleading.

In this Christine Chapel heavy entry, the Enterprise is dispatched to find missing science guy, Dr. Roger Korby. He also happens to be Nurse Chapel’s fiance. He also also happens to be an android. Spoiler. Or not, since this is an episode all about androids and the reveal is pretty obvious the second the guy starts yammering about putting “souls” into machines and living forever.

What Are Little Girls Made Of?

*Whew* Let me regroup.

Kirk and Chapel beam down to rendezvous with Korby. They bring two red shirts with them, and I know it’s a gag for a reason, but these guys die quick. Like comically so. So it’s just Jim and Christine and it’s obvious from the jump that something’s rotten in Denmark. They very lovely lady android kisses Kirk a bunch and has some sort of crisis and then there are illusions to androids having feelings and stuff. Ugh. This episode is not what I expected. There are two Kirks. Again. And excessive use of the name “Christine.” (Drinking game, anyone?) You guys, do you know who wrote this episode?

ROBERT BLOCH WROTE THIS EPISODE. Yea, Robert “Psycho” Bloch. (He’s credited for two more, so fingers crossed.) With that title, and that talent, I expected a masterpiece. Wikipedia tells me Roddenberry did some rewrites, and that Bloch’s script had featured more Lovecraftian themes. It’s Wikipedia, so it must be true, right?

What Are Little Girls Made Of?

Instead of complaining, I will say yay to lots of Chapel. And yay to Bloch. And yay to Andrea the gorgeous android. And, finally, yay to Ted Cassidy. Perhaps this one warrants a rewatch. I don’t think I’ve seen it before either. I may have to give it a second look, if only because Chapel is such a thankless badass and this entry is no exception.
