Netflix Film Festival 12: The Anniversary Edition

Well it’s finally happened folks. My 12th monthly edition of Netflix Film Festival. It’s been an interesting year to be sure! I’ve given you 70+funky film recommendations so far and I don’t see any end in site. So here’s 5 more for your viewing pleasure:

Extreme Justice (1993)

Directed by Mark Lester (Commando, Class of 1984, Firestarter, Showdown in Little Tokyo), and starring Lou Diamond Philips, Scott Glen, Yaphet Kotto, and Andrew Divoff, Extreme Justice is high on action, police brutality, and scenery chewing. Watch for Divoff’s hilarious attempt at being latino. We all know he’s the Wishmaster, but it’s fun to see him try.

Chawz (2009)

South Korean cinema rules and Chawz is no exception. It’s a killer pig on the loose flick but it manages to find time to be influenced by Twin Peaks too. Action, comedy, and bizarre characters make this one a winner.

The Keep (1983)

A box office bomb, The Keep is director Michael Mann’s best kept secret. Amazing set pieces, great funky music, good special effects and acting; the critics hated it so it must be good. Nazis + super powerful demon thing = awesome. A visually stunning flick, queue this sucker up right away. I don’t even mind that it’s very different from the book in which it was based. Who cares? It’s a killer movie. Plus it also stars Scott Glenn. Bonus points.

Pulling John (2009)

I love funky sports docs and Pulling John is the best that I’ve seen in a long time. Professional arm-wrestlers train to win against a man that has been undefeated for the last 20 years. He was even in Over the Top (which is also streaming). It’s got heart, humor, and tension. I couldn’t tear my eyeballs away.

Knuckle (2011)

What’s this? Another sports doc? You betcha. Only this time its pretty damn grim and grotesque. Irish families fight amongst each other in loosely organized bare knuckle boxing match with very few rules and no mercy. Bloody, violent, and demoralizing, this flick made me glad I have such a soft, contemplative life.

I’d like to thank all the folks that read this monthly article. You guys help fuel my fire and keep me on the hunt for new flicks to share with you. Thank you!

I love me some Mark Lester so I’l have to check that one out. The Keep, however, bored me dead, but that might be because Michael Mann has that occasionally useful effect of putting me to sleep with every movie he makes.
