It seems insane that I would have any issues with a tale chronicling a troubled young girl sent to live in a lush and opulent Rhode Island mansion co-written by Guillermo del Toro.

While Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark isn’t terrible, it is pretty forgettable. Teeming with potential, this take on the 1973 original seems tailored to exploit del Toro’s strengths. The fact the the film repeatedly hits sour notes, is jammed with filler, and never manages any emotional resonance is disappointing and dissatisfying. Guillermo certainly knows how to write children; this just made me want to watch Pan’s Labyrinth.

Sigh. Agreed. Just meh all around. And it’s about tiny goblin fairy thingies! Meh should NEVER apply to such a tale!

Mostly, everybody in the movie was really dumb. Light switches–JUST TURN ON A F*CKING LIGHT SWITCH! And stop leaving the little girl alone when you know someone is trying to kill her! And don’t keep her home when you’re hosting a really important party. Can’t the nanny take the kid to the movies or something?

    Sigh.

I want you to see it! See it now! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

And I saw the TV movie when I was young. I don’t really remember it, but it freaked me out at the time.

I want Pan’s Labyrinth projected on the inside of my eyelids!
OK, that’s a lie. I just love that film in all its gut-punching glory.
Yea, forgettable is an accurate word. I’ve been doing some twitter soul searching and I think my expectations were just too high.
