I firmly believe Melancholia is not for everyone, and people’s feelings regarding Von Trier may color their viewing experience. That being said, Melancholia just so happened to be for me, and my viewing experience was similar to being repeatedly punched in the stomach.
With characters that you will simultaneously loathe and empathize with, Von Trier drags haunting performances from all his leads. Much is left unsaid and this is surely a film that will prompt discussion.
Themes of futility, hopelessness, and acceptance of a necessary end have been running rampant through 2011′s releases. Like Melancholia, this is both beautiful and sad.
