Fast becoming a divisive, debate sparking film, Take Shelter is a stripped down look at mental illness.

Whether it be the family or the person who is struggling, vilifying and demonizing a mental health disorder is common in film (and real life). Take Shelter is both rare and haunting in the way it tackles the subject matter. Father and husband Curtis (Michael Shannon) is suffering from debilitating dreams and visions. But instead of becoming a cold, distant stereotype driven melodrama, the family pulls together in heartbreaking solidarity.  Curtis’s wife is easily the most complex female character I’ve seen onscreen this year.
