As a huge Hitchcock fan, was I just setting myself up for disappointment by choosing the Official Psycho Parody as the topic of the second installment in the ‘porn as paracinema series‘? Spoiler alert. I was.

That’s not to say this isn’t a successful porn parody. The plot is pretty faithful. Marion Crane (played shockingly well by Sara Sloane) steals some dough and hits the road. While on the lamb she stops at the Bates Motel where she is quickly dispatched by Norman. Lila and Sam follow, hot on Marion’s trail, and also find themselves at the Bates. This parody is painted with broad strokes and Psycho‘s plot is more of a template. I wasn’t expecting miracles. There was no way this was going to be Psycho, but with sex.

From the film’s opening it was pretty clear I was not going to get what I wanted (see above; Psycho with sex). We first see Marion and Sam, post-coital, just as they appear in the actual film. Instead of showing them have sex, we speed forward to Marion at work where her coworker has a 3 way with the boss and a client. It’s a real missed opportunity and oddly enough, we never see Marion and Sam have sex.

Before we hit the 25 minute mark, we find our main character arriving at the motel where she is greeted by Norman (Ryan McLane). I really felt like it could all turn around here. And it did. For a bit at least. It’s established almost immediately that Bates is a cross-dresser. He’s wearing heels and nail polish and things are beginning to get interesting. “What a neat, kinky, clever way to exploit the fact that this character wears women’s clothes,” I thought aloud. And the scene between McLane and Sloane is great! See my exclamation point? It really is a captivating scene between the 2 most interesting people in the movie. And then she dies and he’s basically MIA for the rest of the film. It’s a shame and things really go downhill after Marion kicks the bucket. Her sister shows up and has some sex as does the private investigator and the sheriff. It’s all quite vanilla and formulaic.

This parody is a mixed bag. Marion and Norman are awesome. The cross-dressing angle is awesome. The fact that disc 2 contains the film in black and white is awesome (and how I recommend viewing this). But what I can’t get over is how, in a film that contains a cross-dressing male character, the sex is so straight, and I don’t mean heterosexual. Well, I guess I do mean that seeing as how all the sex is heterosexual in nature. But I also mean it is lacking in any kink, depravity or deviation from the norm. It’s the same old formula; lather, rinse, repeat.

So, is this a successful porn parody? Sure. This flick gets points for an authentic opening title sequence and some great costuming (as well as the actors and B&W mentioned above). But it’s far less entertaining then it should be.

Next up, I’ll be taking a look at a “classic” porn, Behind the Green Door. I’d also like to thank Gore Gore Girl for all her help with this feature.

I’m finding that than these porn parodies are getting far more invested in recreating the source material than the actual porn itself. At least with the New Sensations movies (which I know this isn’t). I just watched the trailer for the Star Trek the Next Generation XXX Parody, and it just looks like a really well made fan fiction episode of Star Trek. The trailer didn’t even really have anything sexual in it.

All that said, I’m finding that because the sex is so boring I don’t really bother watching them anymore. If it were 1993 and I was fifteen again and the internet wasn’t in every home, it would probably be pretty exciting. But now? These parodies are like porn for people who have never seen porn.

Maybe that’s the point though. Maybe they’re meant for people who aren’t as invested in porn as, um… some people.

    I dunno.

You make so many good points. And I agree.
It’s like these films are comprised of 2 separate entities. The parody itself is interesting, faithful and engaging. But the sex is disconnected from material that is being faithfully parodied. It pains and frustrates me.

I remember when the Big Lebowski XXX Parody came out and I was so blown away by how amazing it looked and what a good job they did recreating the look and feel of The Big Lebowski, but then the actual pornographic material itself was so boring and uninteresting, that it makes me wonder why they’re doing the movies at all. It’s like they’re trying so hard to impress people with their abilities as cinematographers and directors that they forget to make the movies sexy.

If they could combine their skills behind the camera with the pornographic sensibilities of the John Stagliano movie The Fashionistas or even Joanna Angel’s horror parodies like Re-Penitrator or The XXXorcist, then I think they’d really have something I could get into. Or, like, some people could get into. In a general, non-specific to me sense.

Great review christine! Sad the film sucks. I had heard good things and bad things. This cements it. :( I’m glad Sloane came across well though.

Oh, and gawd, The Big Lebowski parody SUCKS. I concur with everything Mr. Humphrey said about it.

I am soooooo excited to read your review of Behind the Green Door. It’s by no means the best XXX movie out there, in spite of being one of the most famous, but you have a treat in store thanks to the simply incredible Marilyn Chambers and Johnnie Keyes (and a particularly memorable money shot). Just *promise* me that after you watch it, you will one day in your long and illustrious life watch Anthony Spinelli’s excellent Sex World (one of my favourite films), in which there is a Behind the Green Door homage scene, which also happens to be in my top ten favourite individual scenes of all time. Wonderful stuff.

Ok, I’m gonna shut up now…

Lebowski is also in the queue, but I can’t say I’m really looking forward to it.

I am pretty excited to watch Behind the Green Door. I don’t know what to expect although I am certain I will be more satisfied with then some of the more current films I’ve been watching.

I’ll have to add Sex World to the aforementioned queue. I’m looking forward to delving into some of the “classics.”

I’m glad you liked the review :)

I definitely prefer Insatiable over Behind the Green Door as far as Marilyn Chambers movies go. It’s totally hot.

    I love this new series.

I gotta ask, though, how was the music? I would love to hear them bow-chicka-wow-wow the Pyscho theme.

I think the only porn parody I’ve watched is Edward Penishands, and the group I was with decided that it was terribly disappointing that they only gave him two giant penises (penii?) as opposed to five on each hand.

    • http://www.paracinema.net Christine

      Glad you’re enjoying it!

The music was OK. It was only really noticeable during the opening and closing credits. And then it was a pretty decent play on Herrmann’s Psycho theme.
During the actual sex, I can barely remember any music!
Edward Penishands is the stuff of legend! I should really watch it.

Disappointing to hear the film ain’t so great. Really. It seems there isn’t a well balanced edge of sex as it would play out overtly to a re-model of a similar story? If that makes any sense…

    • http://www.paracinema.net Christine

No, that totally makes sense. And you’re spot on.
It could be so much better!

I’m really enjoying your trek into porn as paracinema, Christine. I will admit to having seen the likes of ‘The Erotic Witch Project’ and ‘Playmate of the Apes’ (starring Misty Mundae!) in my local video shop – but I neglected to rent them! The idea of porn parodies is fascinating though – especially as you are treating them quite seriously. And rightly so! I seem to recall reading on Paracinema a while back about Breakfast Club and Big Lebowski porn parodies, too (films I wouldn’t have expected, but I guess that’s the fun aspect).

Looking forward to your next instalment! And who knows, maybe I shall dip my toe into the murky realms of porn parodies one day soon, too. No pun intended. Ahem! :)

    • http://www.paracinema.net Christine

I’m glad you’re enjoying them, James. It means a lot.
I’ve never even heard of “Playmate of the Apes.” You better believe as soon as I click “submit” I’m googling that shit!
If you ever venture into the parody realm, be sure to let me know your feelings.
