Well, I can honestly say that space is what scares me most. You could read a lot of deep shit into that fear. All kinds of stuff about vastness and the unknown. Or you could go for the more physical threat of aliens. Aliens are in space, and those sort of frightening. I digress…
This blog is about Sunshine, which is quite a good film. I have a film maker crush on Danny Boyle though. Dario Argento, Boyle, Guillermo Del Torro and I are getting married next spring. Anyway! I have nothing negative to say in any respect. Good story, good plot, good acting, good good good. Boring Boring Boring. I must write from where my passion lies… and with this movie, it’s in the space phobia.
I hate space! I just hate it! It is dumb and wrong and confusing and apparently very cold. This film made me almost cry and cringe and flinch more than any horror/gore/splatter fest I have ever seen. I found it immensely disturbing; more so than a small creature popping out of a chest.
It could just be me, I’m a complex individual and stuff. There are just so many scenes in this film that truly capture what I don’t dig about space. The vastness is one thing. Another is the overwhelming power of the sun; its power over Earth and its power to incinerate. So much burning in this movie! So much in fact that it had to be balanced with lots of freezing. Frozen eyeballs and deep space frozen dying. So much dying. It was deathapalooza.
Beautiful film though. It was visually lovely. And someone was finally able to drag a decent performance from Chris Evans aka Johnny Storm. So to wrap this up I say this: see this film, it is above average. It’ll only bother you if your distaste for space is an issue.
